Overview
SpeedRead has no servers and collects nothing. There are no accounts and no analytics. Your library, reading statistics and settings are stored on your device, and all processing runs locally on your device.
Data Collection & Storage
We do not collect any personal data.
- Everything you add (articles, text, files) is stored only on your device.
- All processing (article extraction, summaries) happens directly on your device.
- Reading statistics, preferences and streaks stay on your device.
- The app has no user accounts, analytics, tracking cookies, advertising identifiers or telemetry.
- We have no servers, so nothing is sent to us, and we never share or sell data to third parties.
- You can export, import or delete all your data at any time in Settings. Uninstalling the app deletes it as well.
- If your phone's own backup (iCloud or Google) is turned on, your phone may include the app's data in that backup. The backup is handled by Apple or Google under your account, not by us.
Web Articles & Direct Downloads
When you add a link (by pasting it or sharing it to the app), the app downloads the page directly from that website to your device, just as a browser would. That website therefore sees an ordinary visit from your phone, for example its IP address.
The content extraction and formatting take place entirely on your device. No SpeedRead or proxy server sits in between, so we never see the links you open or what you read.
Posts from X
When you add a link to a post on X, the app requests the public text of that post from public services that provide it. Only the post's address is used: the app sends the post's public ID and nothing else.
If that does not work, the app requests the same public post from X's own public services in the same way. No account information, device identifiers or other personal data are sent to these services.
Optional Downloads: Natural Voice & AI Summaries
Two add-ons are optional. They are downloaded only when you tap Download (in Settings, or when the app offers you the natural voice):
- Natural voice: a speech model that reads text aloud in a lifelike voice.
- AI summaries: a summary model chosen to suit your phone, which writes summaries or picks key sentences and tags.
The files come from a public service that hosts open AI models. As with any download, that service receives an ordinary request from your phone (for example its IP address); the app sends no account or personal information. Every file is checked against a fixed fingerprint and then stored on your phone.
The models run entirely on your phone: the text you read or listen to never leaves your phone. You can remove them at any time in Settings. Your phone may also delete them when storage runs low; the app then offers the download again.
On-Device AI Summaries
On-device AI never leaves the phone. Summaries, key points and tags are created on your device, by your phone's built-in AI when it is available or by the optional summary model described above. Without either, the app offers the free download instead of showing them. Reading quizzes are built on your device from the text itself.
Your article text and reading materials never leave your device and are never uploaded to cloud AI services.
Features of Your Phone
Some features use services built into your phone: the system voice for Listen, the dictionary for Define, the share menu and the phone's own AI. They are part of your phone's operating system and are covered by Apple's or Google's privacy terms.
Copied links
The optional “Offer copied links” setting is on by default. In the Library, iPhone checks whether the clipboard contains a probable web link without reading its text; it reads the text only when you tap Read. Android may read a new text clip while SpeedRead is in the foreground and may show its paste notice. Only a clipboard change identifier and a hash used to recognise repeated links are saved locally. You can turn these offers off in Settings. Opening a copied link makes the network requests described above.
Children's Privacy
SpeedRead does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13 years of age.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date.
